Parents have been challenged to continue ensuring discipline among their children despite schools opening.

Catherine Asego of Elimu Yetu Coalition on Sunday alleged parents had a habit of leaving the discipline of their children in the hands of teachers.

Asego said parents should follow up on their sons and daughters even in schools to ensure good behavior despite the end of the holiday season.

“While teachers must not deny the responsibility of instilling discipline among their students, parents on the other hand should do follow ups,” said the activist.

“Some parents do not even call to ensure their children have safely reported to schools, leave alone checking with the teachers if they (the children) are well behaved in school,” she lamented.

“Education without discipline is like wearing a tie without clothes,” reiterated the Kisumu based activist.

Last year saw many school going children especially those in high school engage in various acts of indiscipline among them drug abuse, burning of schools and sex orgies.

In August, 45 high school students from Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties were nabbed smoking bhang and engaging in sexual activities in a Nairobi bound bus at the close of school.

Other eight students from various secondary schools in Kisumu were also arrested after being found engaging in similar activities at an estate in the county.

Asego also urged parents to avoid early pregnancies and pre-mature marriages of their school going children by openly discussing sexual relationship issues with them.

“It is no longer useful to hide these things from them because they being a digital generation will always find their way around engaging in sexual relationships,” she said.
