Kikuyu Education Officer Zipporah Gikambi has urged those who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to join vocational and technical training institutions.

Speaking during the Kikuyu Scholarship Programme day held at the CDF grounds on Thursday, the officer said that the students should join the institutions and not because they missed out on university slots but because the institutions give good skills that are entrepreneurial

She said that these institutions have been ignored by the current generation as they are thought and believed to be those attended by those who didn’t perform well in KCSE or even dropouts. She said that these institutions offer skilful courses that encourage entrepreneurship among those who take them.

“Entrepreneurship is important in such skills. In some developed countries, students who attain good grades join these institutions for skills required in the marketplace,” said Gikambi.

She said that this was not to say students should not go to universities but explained that most students think opportunities are only in universities. She said that was a mentality that has derailed technical institutions in Kenya.
