Nyamira County residents turned up in large numbers to get free medical screening and subsequent treatment in a monthly exercise funded by Dr Joy Foundation.
The exercise supported by Dr Joy Kerubo is carried out on a monthly basis in all the twenty wards in Nyamira with a team of medical experts from Nairobi and US.
Speaking during the exercise on Friday, coordinator Dr Mary Orucho lauded residents for showing up for checkup and reiterated the commitment of the foundation to promote good health in the county.
“You come in large numbers, it’s an indication that you care. I am happy because promoting good health means supporting development among our people. As a foundation, we will not relent in fighting preventable diseases among our people,” she said.
She said the checkup will help residents know about their health status and take precautionary measures to avert possibilities of contracting diseases without their knowledge.
“Sometimes people wait until they are in hospital bed because of diseases that can be prevented in time. It’s good to have checkups and I am happy that we are doing it. We are also giving them information on the kind of diet that they should take to handle certain conditions,” she added.
The exercise saw residents get check-up on diabetes, cancer, eye screening and kidney screening with those with the conditions expected to be relocated to Nairobi for further treatment.
