Ruiru MP Esther Gathongo has urged bodaboda operators in the constituency to register with the National Health Insurance Fund so as to access proper medical care.
Speaking to the press after meeting boda boda riders on Friday in Ruiru town, Ms Gathongo said failure by boda boda operators to register with medical insurances has denied them access to quality treatment.
The MP observed that 70 per cent of boda boda riders in the constituency are not covered by insurance.
She said boda boda riders who get involved in accidents cannot access proper medical care.
“I am encouraging boda boda riders to register with NHIF and other insurances firms so as to get proper medical care,” she said.
Ms Gathongo asked the National Health Insurance Fund officials to sensitise residents on the importance of registering with the Fund.
She noted that most locals have little information about the fund a move she said had made it difficult to access treatment for complicate ailments.
The Ruiru MP at the same time urged boda boda riders to form and join Saccos.
She stated that through Saccos the riders will be able to present their grievances and interests to leaders.
“The importance of forming Saccos is that you are able to speak and present your concerns to leaders and government,” she said.
The MP said through Saccos the boda boda riders will also be able to promote and expand their business.
