Nyamira County Governor John Nyagarama's wife, Naomi Nyagarama has urged more women to declare their interests in elective posts.

Speaking during the celebration of International Women's day at the county headquarters on Tuesday, Nyagarama challenged women to go for elective posts in 2017 elections as a way of fighting gender disparity in a community perceived to be patriarchal.

Nyagarama said women were in a good position to give alternative leadership in both the county assembly and parliament.

“We have seen our colleagues in the county assembly and parliament in a much objective and incredible manner. It is important that as Nyamira women, we prepare to go for elective posts to challenge status quo in 2017 polls. We are capable of winning and serving our people,” she said.

She challenged political parties to empower women by giving them opportunities to serve within party leadership positions and called for fairness during nominations.

“It’s time that our leading political parties belief that we can do it as women. We are ready to serve within party circles and at the same time, it’s important that party nominations are done in fair manner,” she added.

Nyagarama also urged political parties to reduce the nomination fee so that they can attract more women during party nominations.

“I know many of you will be ready to compete with our fellow men, it is also important that political parties reduce the amount charged as nomination fee given our economic status in the community. Otherwise we would like to see more women competing in elective positions,” she said.
