Doctors who operate in government hospitals have been discouraged from opening chemist businesses following reduced stock of drugs in Kairi Dispensary.
Speaking from Kairi on Monday, Kairi Dispensary hospital administrator Agnes Karondu noted that the dispensary had a loss of drugs costing over Sh200,000.
Karondu noted that the dispensary has three nurses and one doctor warning that she has reported the loss to police officers who have launched thorough investigations.
"We have a loss of drugs of about 200,000 which have been missing from two months now. Our reports do not correspond with the reports of the used drugs something that triggered me and my team detect the loss. Having three nurses and only one doctor here, we are suspecting our staff who are to be investigated by police immediately," she said.
Karondu said that doctors receive enough salaries to sustain themselves and should leave the chemist businesses to pharmacists. She warned that if her staff will be found guilty for the loss of drugs, immediate action that may lead to their firing will be conducted.
"That which is of the government should remain useful to the designated persons. If my staff will be found liable for the loss by the police, the government will take immediate actions against them. This might lead to some of them being fired," she added.
She further warned chemist operators who employ form four leavers citing that they have less knowledge of prescribing drugs to desperate patients.
