A section of governors want the devolution ministry scrapped off, and instead more funds channeled to county governments.

Governors Dr Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Zachary Okoth Obado (Migori) and Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay) have asked MPs and governors to ensure, through due process, that the ministry is scrapped off since a lot of money meant for the county governments has been retained in the ministry.

The county bosses stated that that the ministry of devolution that is currently headed by Anne Waiguru is a duplication of roles that should have been left strictly for the county governments.

Kidero said that it was politically immoral to interfere with devolved governments in any way and that it is the responsibility of every Kenyan to ensure this new kind of governance works better to benefit citizens.

"I appeal to the governors and MPs to ensure that the devolved functions are fully devolved so that devolution can change the history of this country. The ministry of devolution is a duplication of what counties are doing and it should be scrapped," he said.

The three governors over the weekend told off political leaders who are bent on criticising devolution agenda to channel their energies in the development of the country. They stated that too much politicking has affected the implementation of development policies that have been initiated by the county governments.

Obado accused some politicians of sabotaging the operations of the county governments and appealed to political elite to embrace devolution fully in order for Kenyans to realise its fruits.

"It is important to note that devolution is an important kind of governance and if supported and its policies well implemented will create a better Kenya," he said.

The governors were speaking during the burial of the late Gordon Odero-Jowi in Karungu, Nyatike Sub County where they supported the formation of an economic block among the counties along the Lake Victoria region.

Awiti said that devolution has reached a phase that requires a concerted effort between the political divide to ensure that it is a success. He also urged Kenyans not to listen to political propaganda that have been initiated by enemies of devolution, instead give governors adequate time to deliver.

"Right now we are ready to form an economic block because of devolution and it is necessary for every Kenyan citizen to ensure that devolved governance is supported for better service delivery,' Awiti said.

Former Karachuonyo MP Phoebe Asiyo and the current MP for Karachuonyo Eng James Rege advised leaders and citizens to give governors time and support for them to deliver on their promises and policies of devolution.

"Our youths should stop hooliganism and instead support the working county governments so that the governors can effectively deliver," Asiyo said.
