Hawkers in Nakuru town want the county government relocate all stalls that have been constructed along a sewer line saying it poses a health risk.
Nakuru Hawkers and Street Traders Association chairman Simon Nasieku said some stalls on the Oginga Odinga road were constructed along sewer lines a move he noted has put the health of traders at risk especially during the rainy season.
Nasieku said when it rains, the sewer line overflows and bursts into the stalls some of which sell food.
Speaking Tuesday in Nakuru town, Nasieku said customers have shunned the area as a result of the stench emanating from the area.
“The stalls were constructed along a service lane which has a sewer line and an electricity line and this is dangerous for the traders. The sewer is passing right under the stalls and when it bursts, no business can go on here,” said Nasieku.
“We want the county government to move these stalls to a safer place for both the traders and their customers because some of them are selling food,” he said.
On his part, county public health officer Samuel Kingori said they have already received the complaint and the necessary steps are being taken by the concerned department.
“We have already received that complaint and we have forwarded it to the planning department for necessary action to be taken,” said King’ori.
