Primary school heads from Gesima zone have been warned against absenteeism in their respective schools.

Area education officer Robert Obiria Wednesday said his office will be carrying out random checkups to ensure those with the habit of being away from their stations are punished.

He said head teachers who will be found culpable risked been demoted to classroom teachers to serve as an example to the rest.

“I am aware that some head teachers have been using their powers to miss from their stations of work. The habit must stop failure to which those culpable will be demoted to classroom teachers as an example to the rest. They must at all times be in school to oversee progress unless attending crucial functions,” he said.

Obiria said most of the schools in the region were staggering in performances partly because they were poorly managed and announced his plans to take a stiff action against those who will not cooperate as per the teaching code of ethics.

“Our performances aren’t that appealing and we have a potential of doing better as a team. This can only happen if head teachers regularly lead by example. And this time is the time for their union (Knut) to desist from defending them vehemently when they are caught on the wrong,” he added.

He said the move to have head teachers staying in school will also motivate other teachers to put more efforts in disseminating knowledge among the pupils in area school.
