Health officials from Nyamira County have recovered medicine believed to have been smuggled from Nyamira Level Five Hospital, a few weeks a war against smuggling of drugs was launched.
The raid which was conducted in Nyansiongo and Chepilat townships targeted chemists believed to be owned by government hospitals health workers in the county.
Speaking after the crackdown, the county chief health officer said his department will continue with the crackdown to avert incidents of officers using their powers to divert resources meant for the public.
“We will not relent in this because we had issued a warning. Public resources must be respected and those who think can enrich themselves through smuggling are mistaken. These kind of exercises will be done on a regular basis henceforth,” said Dr Douglas Bosire.
He said the department will work with the police to apprehend and prosecute owners of the store in which the medicine believed to be from Nyamira Level Five Hospital were impounded.
“We will ensure the law is followed and owners of the store apprehended and subsequently arraigned in court to explain circumstances in which they acquired the medicines with special label of the county government,” he said.
He urged residents to be vigilant to ensure they are not subjected to buying medicines and drugs with labels of the county government from private premises.
“As the public, you also have to be vigilant because this is a tragedy to all of us. Ensure no one sells drugs with a special seal of the county government from a private clinic or chemist,” he added.
