A heavy downpour that started on Wednesday night and continued on until Thursday has rendered many Kiganjo estate feeder roads impassable despite earlier promises by area leaders that the roads would be okay.

Many of the roads that had received a facelift before the rains set in were literally flooded, making them hard to be used even by motorists.

Residents blamed the flooding on poor drainage system while others attributed it to structural failure of the roads.

"The flooding problem in Kiganjo will be there as long as the drainage system remains unaddressed. The shallow trenches that the county government has dug along the roads cannot be expected to do much," Stephen Ngarachu, a motorist and a butcher said.

Another resident, Joe Mwaura said they are now fearing that if the rains go on for an extra day, their houses might be flooded.

"Let the county government do something about the blocked trenches. These roads have also been constructed poorly and are shelving flood water," said Mwaura.

However, one of the engineers, Solomon Karanja, who is working on Thika bypass (Kiganjo-Athena-Kiandutu Road) blamed the flooding on the topography of the area.

"This is a flat low-lying area and the problem of floods cannot be entirely solved. The magnitude of the rain has also been big since yesterday night", he said.
