Nyamira governor John Nyagarama has pointed out his achievements in the health sector, about two years after the health function was devolved.
Speaking on Wednesday at Nyamaiya stadium during a special function of receiving a mobile clinic from First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Nyagarama said the county government had invested in the health sector, transforming it contrary to criticism he has been receiving from certain quarters.
He said his government has been spending over Sh1.6 billion annually to equip health centers and improve the infrastructure with an aim of making health services accessible to every resident.
“I don’t think we have done badly as some people always suggest. The county government has equipped a number of hospitals and even improved the facilities in the last two years. People can now access services even at local dispensaries,” he said.
Nyagarama seemed to blame area MPs for allegedly constructing more dispensaries without consulting the county leadership on capacity building.
“The problem though that we have been facing is seeing some leaders set up structures without consulting the county government for adequate preparations to equip them. The health facility is not just the building we see, it’s all about the structures and facilities in it,” he said.
He pledged to solve the issue of few staff in the health centers by recruiting more medics.
“We have done a supplementary budget of about Sh500 million and I think we can recruit more health workers to join those who were employed recently,” he said.
