The pilot project to equip Nyaribari Chache Sub-county residents with computer skills dubbed as, 'ICT Mashinani' was officially launched on Friday at Keumbu social hall.
Twenty-three graduands were conferred with certificates after undergoing a two-month ICT course.
The project that is being sponsored by African International College of Management and Technology (AICMT), is aimed at equipping the old and young residents with Information Technology skills to enable them to carry on their transactions effectively.
Speaking while addressing graduands, the college's branch Director Nathan Orora said the graduands would be absorbed by the college to train others in an effort aimed at penetrating the whole constituency.
"We are happy to have this project in our constituency. IT is one way of reducing poverty. We are now working on a program that will ensure effective and comprehensive implementation of the project in the constituency," said Orora.
However, he noted there was a low intake of the course by residents.
He has since urged the residents to embrace the pilot project in order to become technologically fit.
He, in particular, persuaded women to enroll for the course to enable them to transact their business and agricultural activities online using their phones, saying that way, they will double their income.
"I ask residents to come out in large numbers and train for computer skills in order to be in tandem with the fast moving world of technology. We don't charge any tuition fee. A student gets a full scholarship to study the short term course. Everything is changing to digital. Soon we will be moving our business and agricultural activities online."
The college's principal Mr Paul Makini said Nyaribari Chache is the second one to have the project implemented in the county after Kitutu Chache South.
He revealed ICT Mashinani project is targeting 50,000 people in Kisii County before the end of the year.
"We hope that before the end of this year, more than 50,000 people in the county shall have studied computer," he said.
Mr Makini said they are having talks with established institutions and individuals of good will to strengthen the project in the region to ensure at least the youth and elderly have been trained.
He challenged the graduands to be ambassadors of the college by encouraging others to enroll for the course.
Makini disclosed that the college has produced more than 20,000 people since its establishment in Kisii 16 years ago.
"Since the college came in Kisii in the year 2000, we are boasting to have produced more than 20,000 people who are shining in their places of work," noted the college principal.
