The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been urged to make early preparations for the upcoming general elections in 2017.

Kisumu West Constituency politician Edgar Hongo said IEBC has the mandate to carry out a free and fair exercise.

Hongo said that in the last general election IEBC failed to assemble in time equipment that was to be used in the election.

He said late preparations affected the outcome of the elections as some BVR kits failed to function.

“Kenyans want the Commission to make early preparations and be able to run an efficient election exercise. Chaos always erupt if the elections are not credible and that happens when there is haphazard preparations,” he said.

Speaking at Kisian in the constituency on Sunday, Hongo said that post-election violence in 2007 occurred as a result of the mess by the commission.

He said elections should not divide the country and the conduct and the way the Commission plans to carry out the electoral process matters a lot for Kenyans.

While speaking to boda boda operators in Kisian, Hongo urged them to maintain peace and be able to register for voters’ card to be able to elect their desired leaders in 2017.

He promised to uplift them economically and told them to embrace saving of their hard earned cash for future use.

He gave out reflector jackets to help them operate during the night without causing accidents.

“I have constructed shades for many boda boda bases in this constituency to help them shield away from sun and rain and I will do more,” he told them.

Hongo further promised to donate motorcycles to each bases within the area to spur economic growth.
