The Independent Electoral Boundaries and Commission has been urged to provide means of ensuring people living with disabilities and the aged get opportunity of registering as voters.
This comes moments after the IEBC rolled its strategic plan of ensuring it registers many voters ahead of 2017 polls.
Speaking at his Gesima backyard on Monday, Gesima MCA Ken Atuti said the commission had not issued a statement on how it would reach people living with disabilities and the aged for registration.
“I know we have many aged people who cannot walk long distances given the topography of our region to register as voters. The disabled people as well go through similar problems. We need to come out with a special plan for such kind of people so that they are registered to exercise their rights,” he said.
He challenged the electoral body to deploy at least one clerk who would be mandated to register the people in that category.
“I don’t really think IEBC announced enough slots for those who will be carrying out the exercise. However, it will be important they come up with a plan that will see these people registered at the comfort of their homes,” he added.
He said the move would enable aged people and those living with disabilities to make their voice heard in general elections by participating in polls.
“Last time many of them were unable to register especially from my ward. We tried to improvise transportation means but the number for instance in my ward was a bit large. It will be important for them to be registered at their homes,” Mr Atuti said.
