Things are looking up in matters environment in Limuru after the county government cleaned up a dumpsite that was a health hazard and an eyesore to the locals.

The dumpsite located behind shops that sell vehicle spare parts at Limuru town was removed by trucks and a tractor-attached shovel days ago.

The exercise was overseen by Limuru environment officer Peter Okoth who stood by and supervised the work clad in gumboots. Okoth said the county government of Kiambu was quick in removing the dumpsite after residents complained of it being there.

“We will scoop all the garbage and carry it to the Limuru dumpsite where garbage is disposed of and then hammer a sign here telling people not to dump garbage anymore,” said Okoth.

He attributed the poor waste management methods to increase in population over the years, and poor town planning. Residents milled around as the garbage was scooped away, praising the county government of Kiambu for the efforts.

James Kimani said the dumpsite was visited by street boys and was infested by flies, rats and other rodents.

“A clean environment will be good for the locals and businessmen, as customers will not be put off by stench and piles of garbage rotting away behind the shops,” said Kimani.

Okoth said the county government was planning to carry out sensitisation programmes to educate the public on taking care of the environment, which includes proper waste disposal.
