Young graduates in Kibera were on Tuesday given tips on building their image.

More than 100 youths who turned up for the young graduates mentorship programme were told on how their image and first impression matters in their interview.

Speaking to the youths, motivational speaker and public image consultant Dereck Bbanga said what applicants say during the interview only accounts for seven per cent of their total marks.

"Your visual impression carries 55 per cent of the marks therefore you should build your image to impress the interviewer. Start with grooming. You should always be presentable. This means that you should dress officially. Also, check on your behaviour when you arrive in the interviewing room," added Bbanga.

He said most youths fear greeting the interviewer but urged them to be doing so.

"Greeting the interviewer shows that you are confident in yourself. Also, remember that you should always look the interviewer in the eyes and also maintain an upright posture throughout. You should never but your legs together because it shows that you fear something,’’ he advised.

The speaker, however, said the voice of an interviewee carries only 38 per cent of the marks awarded in the interview.

"Your voice also has something to show about your image. You should be loud enough for the interviewer to know that you can communicate effectively,’ he told the youths that the first impression can give you a job or not."
