Governors should feel free when they are summoned Senate Committees to shed light on issues raised about their management of resources.
Speaking on Monday at Borabu constituency when she chaired a church fund raiser, Nominated Senator Daisy Nyongesa defended the Senate which has come under sharp criticism by a number of county bosses in the past saying the house had jurisdiction to oversight county governments.
She said the county bosses should not wage war against the Senate and instead should show commitment in clarifying issues raised by their Senate with regard to their performances at the grassroots.
“I think it costs nothing when governors honour summons. They should feel free to honour summons because the senate has jurisdiction to question issues that needs in-depth explanations. Its part of ensuring resources is used prudently,” she said.
Ms Nyongesa said devolution was set to transform lives at the grassroots if the new constitution was respected by all leaders irrespective of their personal opinions against each other.
“The constitution is very clear on our roles as leaders and we ought to respect it. We do not have to violate it and expect devolution to succeed. Ever leader has his or her mandate spelt well and we should respect each other. We can only make progress in devolved units if we respect the constitution,” she added.
She said the senate had a primary role in promoting the county units and urged county bosses to always feel free to work together with the senate.
“I am raising the issue because some of our governors go in public platforms to voice their defiance when summoned. The senate protects county units and it becomes shameful when they (governors) defy the same body that protects their interest at the national level. They have to work with us to spur growth by respecting our oversight role,” she said.
