Jubilation overflowed in Industrial Area GK Prison on Saturday after an embattled police officer, who was bailed out by Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko last week, was escorted out of the prison by the area leaders.

Led by Sonko and Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo, the leaders escorted Titus Ngamau Musila alias Katitu to Githurai area where he was met with jubilation by the residents who sang praises to him.

The residents said they have been spending sleepless nights praying for his release as they have never been safe without him.

They said insecurity had re-surfaced in Githurai and Zimmerman areas where it is said that the officer had helped in flushing out all the criminals.

They lauded the Senator for his efforts in ensuring Katitu was released on bail just as he had promised them earlier during the three-day demonstrations held in Githurai that brought business to a standstill in Githurai and parts of Nairobi due to closure of the Thika superhighway.

In an exclusive interview with this writer, Katitu revealed that he was the residents’ best cop because they believed he had helped eliminate crime in the area before the whole controversy commenced in 2014.

Katitu was arrested after a family of a suspected robber he gunned down at the Githurai bus terminus lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) accusing him of extra-judicial killings.

This sparked massive riots that saw traffic flow affected along the mega superhighway.

Even efforts by politicians including Senator Sonko to have him released bore no fruit.

A year down the line, Katitu says that he has been languishing in Industrial Area Prison where he was taken after being denied bail on grounds that he would tamper with evidence against him.
