Kiambu county governor William Kabogo has urged the national government to improve housing standards in all prisons in the county.

Speaking when he toured Thika Main Prison on Wednesday, Kabogo noted that housing conditions at the prison are in a deplorable state.

The governor said that the government has to improve the situation noting that inmates using the facilities at the prison are suffering.

Kabogo further noted that the welfare and rights of inmates in prisons must be respected.

“The national government should improve on the housing conditions for both the inmates and wardens in all the prisons across Kiambu and even across the country,” Kabogo said.

The governor stated that inmates in prisons deserve better living condition. He said that though they are imprisoned and serving sentences, their rights are still guaranteed in the constitution.

The Kiambu governor said he will work with the national government to improve standards in prisons.

Commissioner of Prisons Mr Isaiah Osugo, who had accompanied Kabogo, said the national government was working on programmes to improve housing in all prisons across the country.

Mr Osugo said that housing is part of the reforms the government is keen to implement in prisons to ensure that the rights of inmates and wardens are not infringed.
