Gatundu North Sub-County Commissioner Daniel Nyamiti has warned residents who take the law into their own hands and fight back robbers in the area.
Speaking on Monday, after announcing the death of a robber who was killed by a mob for stealing a phone, Nyamiti told the residents to take the alleged robbers to the police instead of assaulting them.
He revealed that, Eliud Mwangi, 26, had indeed stolen a phone from Martha Gathoni in Kamwangi which was returned back to her. He said that the public heat Mwangi on the head with a metal which caused him to collapse and eventually die a few hours later.
He warned that those who engaged in beating the alleged robbers would be brought to book and arrested after investigations are over.
''We have this morning witnessed the death of Eliud Mwangi, a young man who was ruthlessly beaten by angry residents for stealing a phone from a lady within Kamwangi Town. He was later rescued by one of my officers who was making a morning patrol and taken to our station to record a statement before going for treatment. He, unfortunately, died in the course of treatment at Kamwangi dispensary,'' stated Nyamiti.
The body of Mwangi was taken to Gatundu District mortuary.
