Farmers in Kangundo sub county in Machakos county have been challenged to make use of the ongoing rains to plant adaptive crops in order to enhance food security.
Speaking from his office on Wednesday, the sub county agricultural officer Benson Mwangi said that this rainy season offers farmers with the best chance to improve food production in the region.
“Farmers should plant adaptive crops that can withstand the heavy rains in order to improve food production,” said Mwangi.
He said that the farmers should embrace modern methods of farming such as crop rotation. Mwangi also said famers to seek information and technical services from the relevant government authorities on how to carry out their farm practices to ensure maximum production.
"The county released 38 tractors to be used by farmers and so they should take advantage of the tractors to plough their farms,” he added.
He added that farmers should consider commercialising their agricultural production in order to increase their income and livelihood.
“It is time farmers considered agricultural production as a business that can bring them monetary benefits,” said Mwangi.
