Residents of Kangundo Sub-County have been urged to be vigilant when purchasing second hand items in a bid to curb sale of stolen goods.

Speaking after arresting a woman found with goods suspected to be stolen from a shop in Kangundo Town two weeks ago, Kangundo Sub-County OCS Morris Okul said many people have a habit of buying second hand goods since they are cheap not knowing that the goods might be stolen.

The officer said whoever will be found culpable of handling stolen goods will be prosecuted.

"It has become a habit for people to buy second hand items not knowing their origin, which is a crime punishable by law,” said Okul.

Okul advised residents to ask for receipts whenever they buy second hand goods and also record the seller's identification card number and phone number.

He said the records will enable police to trace the seller if the need arises.

"It is important for residents to be vigilant when purchasing second hand goods as it is obvious stolen goods are sold cheaply to attract customers. Before purchasing goods make sure you are issued with receipts and information concerning the seller,” said Okul.
