Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has given Governor Alfred Mutua a one-week ultimatum to return to the country.

Mr Kalonzo said failure by the governor to jet back to Kenya by Saturday March 12, as directed will necessitate Wiper party to take disciplinary action against him.

Governor Mutua is said to have left the country on a trip to Tanzania, Dubai and Indonesia and is yet to return home over 30 days since his departure.

"I have not heard of an elected leader staying away from his country for that long," Kalonzo said.

"Therefore, he should come back home. If not, as a party leader, I will accuse him of abdication of responsibility where the party will take an advisory opinion."

The Cord Co-Principal was speaking on Saturday during the opening of Kyandu Academy in Kyevaluki in Kangundo sub county.

He accused Mr Mutua of turning into a "tourist" at a time Machakos residents needed his leadership to steer development.

Kalonzo, who has had a frosty relationship with the governor said there were pending development projects in the county which needed to be completed and that for the county boss to spend over 30 days outside the country was uncalled for at such a time.

He said the health sector in Machakos was deteriorating as nurses at the Kangundo Level Five Hospital had downed their tools because of poor and delayed pay.

He accused Governor Mutua of being used by the Jubilee administration to divide the Kamba community.

The former Vice President told residents to register as voters in large numbers in preparation for the 2017 general election which he said Cord has confidence of winning.

Present at the event was Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala who said if the governor did not return within seven days, he would take over the county's leadership as the governor.

According to Chapter Eleven of the 2010 Constitution, a deputy governor can be sworn in to take over the leadership of a county if a vacancy occurs at the office of the governor.

"If a vacancy occurs in the office of county governor, the deputy county governor shall assume office as county governor for the remainder of the term of the county governor," the Constitution says in Chapter 11 (2).
