The national government has released Sh1.4 billion for free maternity services in referral and county hospitals across the country.

In a statement to the newsrooms on Thursday, Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the money has been immediately disbursed to counties for provision free maternity services.

The funds, according to Macharia, have been disbursed to all counties and referral hospitals including Kenyatta National Hospital and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTHR).

Kiambu is among top counties that has received a huge chunk of the funds. The county has been allocated Sh68.8 Million to aid in free maternity services.

Other counties with huge chunks are Nairobi (Sh107.6 million) Kakamega (Sh62.4 Million) and Bungoma (Sh56 Million) respectively.

Counties that got the least funds are Samburu (Sh4 million), Tana River (Sh4.5 Million), Marsabit (Sh4.7 million) and Lamu Sh4.7 million.

Macharia said from now on the maternity funds will be channeled to the bank accounts of individual public health facilities.

A section of counties had complained over the delay in the release of free maternity funds.

Speaking at Thika Level Five Hospital on Tuesday, Kiambu governor William Kabogo had complained over the delay by the national government to disburse the funds to aid in the provision of free maternity services.
