The National Youth Service (NYS) and the Devolution Ministry have given the Kibera slum a facelift.
Despite creating jobs for the youths, NYS ensured the slum shed off the ‘dirty area’ name. Kibera which has always carried the flying toilets tag underwent drastic transformation to an extent that the residents could feel it literally. In fact, the biggest slum in Africa is a wash with litter, most of which is plastic bags. The problem would make the Late Wangari Mathai winner of the Nobel price campaign for the ban of plastic papers.
For everyone visiting, this congested slum is wanting in hygiene and sanitation a factor that should be food and thought for the authorities both the national and county government. Flying toilets have however taken a new direction when it comes to landing. People here will not throw it directly to you but as you walk you will feel something landing on you. You will not realize it until your smell changes.
Sometimes, people will pack it very well and leave them at the roadside. You could think someone forgot his shopping. Please open it at your own risk. This will expose what the luggage is.
NYS should revive its program in collaboration with the devolution ministry to help this problem be curbed.
