Kibera matatu operators have been asked to stop overloading their vehicles so as to curb accidents on the roads.

A Kibera resident, Benjamin Ayuma this afternoon said that most matatu operators do not follow the simple rules set by National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA).

“Many matatu operators, especially private vehicles have turned their personal cars to PSV’s. It is very dangerous to overload PSV’s or even personal cars,’’ said Ayuma.

He further noted that since the Probox came into the transport sector, the habit of overloading has increased since the operators usually carry passengers in the boot together with their luggage.

“At times, we are forced t overload to earn more money. Personal cars carry 4 to 6 passengers. From Laini Saba to Yaya Centre, one pays sh20 - sh30 but if I overload, like I will make even double the money,’’ said Michael Ndwiwa, a matatu owner.

Residents in the area have asked the drivers to stop overloading as this causes a lot of accidents as well as deaths on the roads.
