Residents in Kibera, especially those residing within Darajani village, have been urged to keep the drainage system and all water channels in the area clean to avoid floods, especially at times like this when the area is receiving rains.

This comes after the area was reported to be dirty as residents damp polyethene bags into the drainage systems leading to blockage of the drainage system where water flows especially during heavy rains. Once the drainage system blocks, water gets stagnant in the blocked drainage system leading to the breeding of mosquitoes which brings about malaria and many other illnesses. the

The cleaning department in the area finds it hard when cleaning the drainage systems due to the increased careless dumping of wastes in the water channels.  On the other hand, the residents said they do not have enough space to dispose waste materials since the relevant  authorities from the national and county governments have failed to provide them with dumping sites in the area.

The residents have urged the county government, with the help of their landlords and house caretakers, to provide them with areas to dispose the used polyethene papers, food remains and rotten products such as fruits, tomatoes, sukuma wiki, instead of throwing and dumping them into the water drainage systems which may in return destroy the environment by floods and hence bring about health risks to residents.
