The ongoing rains are God-send for vegetable farmers in Kibera.

The farmers, a majority of them youths who have formed groups, have decided to employ other means of farming aside from just using sacks as their farms.

The youths now are growing their vegetables in containers including five litter water bottles which they cut at the top and plant fast maturing vegetables.

Such vegetables do not require a lot of space.

Speaking to this writer on Tuesday, Ignatius Molenje of Kibera Junction Self-help Youth group said they ventured into spinach and indeginous vegetable growing since the two types use less space.

“Our vegetable choice was as a result of competition and resources. We realised that we did not have a lot of space so we decided to try out bottle farming and it has given us positive results,” added Amos Osoro.

“Also, we studied the market well and so that there are quite a number of people using sacks for farming and that most of them were into sukuma wiki growing. Spinach is rarely grown in Kibera.’’
