Kibra residents want the county government of Nairobi to ensure water trenches are dug and the area’s poor drainage system improved as the peak of the heavy rains approach.

According to some of the residents, the area lacks suitable drainage systems, making it prone to floods, which destroy roads and already dug tunnels.

The residents fear that the rains currently being experienced in the county could be early signs of El Nino rains.

They now want the department of environment to define and maintain water channels which they said was insufficient in Kibra.

According to Daniel Onyango, a resident Kibra, they find it difficult to wade through the waters of the swollen river that had burst its banks.

“Last evening after heavy down I found my all my property submerged in water,” he said.

He said crops that were planted along the river bank had been flattened by the raging waters.

Onyango said residents now live in fear of experiencing hunger and outbreak of waterborne diseases which are associated with floods.
