Kikuyu senior elders have been called upon to take charge and guide the youthful generation against engaging in drugs and substance abuse which has become a rapidly spreading vice among youths in the country.
Speaking on Sunday after the Kikuyu council of elders meeting held in Nakuru, the chairman of the council Ndungu Gaithuma stated that the rising cases of drug and alcohol abuse witnessed among youths needed quick attention in order to save the generation.
"It is so sad to see our youths engage in drugs and alcoholism, as leaders especially from the central province, we should stand firm and bring to an end this vice to give our youths a bright future," Gaithuma urged.
The Kikuyu elders chair also pointed out the importance of passing community customs to the youths and that it will not only preserve the Kikuyu community's culture but also help improve on their moral standards.
"Our youths should be educated and enlightened on our customs and traditions to ensure that the Kikuyu culture is not lost along the way. This will also help us impart morality among youths so that they can differentiate the good deeds from the bad," Gaithuma added.
The Sunday meeting was attended by over 600 members of the community from 11 counties where a ranging number of issues were discussed including the community's customs and prestige and matters of national politics.
