A women’s group in Kikuyu has launched an initiative that will see it hire youths as in its bid to address joblessness in the region.
Speaking Thursday at Give Hope Hall, Mwema Women's Group chairlady Anita Ndirangu said they have started projects that will see them recruit not less than 50 youths from the area.
She said the projects include three carwash centres in Zambezi, and also plan to buy five motorcycles for their boda boda business and two mini buses that will ply the Kikuyu-Nairobi route.
Ndirangu said the group has been saving for seven years now, and these projects will not only benefit the members but also to create jobs for the youth.
She said they will launch the ventures starting with the carwash business in January next year.
"These projects seek to benefit unemployed youths from different parts of Kikuyu. We have identified youths from different areas, some whom idle at bus stops, others do drugs while six live on the streets," said Ndirangu.
She at the same time urged the Kiambu County government to initiate projects that would create jobs for the youths.
The chairlady said most youths have the ability and are hard working if only they got the opportunity.
