Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang has said the ministry is continuing with the process of reviewing the education curriculum for primary and secondary schools in a bid to make studies in tandem with current social economic dynamics of modern society.
Kipsang spoke in Nakuru on Wednesday during a two-day education research conference which brought together reputable scholars and educationists across the country.
“Curriculum is not about education, it is bigger than education. Education is only a driver of curriculum. According to education experts, it is good practice to review a curriculum every five years, and therefore it is a shame that we have not reviewed ours for 13 years,” the PS stated.
The PS said the comprehensive review which will be done through the Institute of Curriculum Development aims at enabling young learners acquire education that is responsive to focal needs of society where learners will not only acquire knowledge about life concepts but also get the benefit of experiencing knowledge acquired in real life while in school.
'There is need to look at the knowledge, skills, competencies and values that we would like to impart to our children and young generation through the new curriculum to suit this competitive period.
He further stated that the government had committed two per cent of its gross domestic product on funding research programme in education, health and agriculture, sectors he observed; remain critical to economic prosperity of the country.
“If we want to make a mistake in this country is to fail to invest in education and research. This is why as government we have set aside 2 per cent of GDP towards this research because we know what it is that a research can do for a country,” Kipsang added.
