Residents of Kisian in Kisumu County have been urged to ensure meat meant for consumption in butchers has been inspected by an authorised officer.

Derrick Oganda from the county Public Health office said many people are buying uninspected meat from butchers, hence being exposed to various health risks.

Oganda who spoke Monday in the area after inspecting butcheries said customers should always demand an inspection certificate from the butcher before buying meat.

“I advise the public that not all meat in a butchery has been certified for consumption, kindly ask for a certificate showing that the meat has been inspected by a qualified veterinary officer,” said Oganda.

The public health official added that many people slaughter animals purporting them to be healthy when in the real sense they are sick.

“Not any animal that is standing is fit for consumption, and everybody falls for this trap when we see meat in butcheries”, added Oganda.

He urged all butchers to ensure they are provided with certificates for the meat they purchase from slaughterhouses.

“In this day we should not bear consequences of negligence and arrogance especially when it comes to our health,” added Oganda.
