Kisian shopkeeper on Friday 11th December scooped a first-class honors degree award in Maseno University's 15th graduation ceremony at the Main Siriba Campus. Mr. Kevin Waomba, 25, a Bio-medical Laboratory Sciences student said that it has not been an easy sail through as it needed more than commitment and determination.
"It has not been an easy journey; it took a lot of commitment because i was a student, businessman and father all at the same time," said Waomba.
Jubilant Waomba started his business ventures after his secondary school education serving as a shopkeeper attendant in Eldoret and could save upto Kshs.3, 000 from his monthly payment which he used together with his first HELB loan to start a small kiosk at Malava in Kakamega county.
The kiosk under the management of his younger brother George Waomba, 22, grew over the years even during it's relocation to Kisian as a properly stalked shop. Kevin said it was by trusting his brother George who could not complete his secondary school education as a result of inadequate funds by their parents.
"I trusted my younger brother and he has been a blessing in my journey," he said.
He has attributed his success to smart reading at odd hours especially at night because given his poor background, he had to work during the day to also support his 2 siblings who are still schooling in raising pocket money and part of their fees given their poor family background.
"I occasionally used my bicycle to ensure that I attended nearly all my classes from Kisian since education was my first priority," said Waomba.
He has challenged students to always listen to their lecturers, attend classes and do their assignments as they would only reap what they sow. He is currently an intern at Kisumu's Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
