Five people died on the spot Tuesday evening after a Kisii bound matatu lost control and hit a lorry near Daraja Moja junction in Kisii County.

Several other victims who picked severe injuries are recuperating at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The grisly accident is the forth in less than a month in Kisii town and its environs, with the total number of deaths rising to twelve.

According to an eye witness, the matatu operating under Zoin Nissan Team lost control on its way to Kisii town near Gusii Institute of Technology before hitting a lorry in front of it, leading to three deaths instantly with two more succumbing to their injuries later.

“The matatu lost control near Gusii Institute and the driver was unable to regain control. The matatu hit the lorry and its driver was among those who died on spot alongside two passengers. A few pedestrians escaped unhurt,” said Bernard Omare.

Kisii OCPD Tom Mutisya confirmed the accident and warned drivers and vehicle owners against operating vehicles which are poorly maintained.

“I can confirm that a total of five people have died as a result of the accident. It’s really sad that accidents are caused out of our own carelessness. Those owning vehicles should ensure they are properly maintained to combat such unnecessary accidents because this was as a result of lack of brakes,” he said.

He said police will extend their operations in apprehending those operating road unworthy vehicles in the region and said the exercise will be continuous.
