Kisii town residents want the county government to dig water trenches and improve the town’s poor drainage system due to the current heavy rains.

The residents said they face a lot of difficulties when it rains because of the floods and the only solution is to unblock the drainage systems.

Dennis Ombwori who lives in Mwembe says he must always carry gumboots when leaving his house because of floods when it rains.

"The floods are just too much, I have to arm myself with gumboots everyday, the county government must do something to change this," he said.

The residents fear that the heavy down pour currently experienced in the county could be early signs of El Nino rains.

They now want department of environment to define and maintain water floods channels which is insufficient in Kisii town.

On Tuesday morning, a number of residents heading to Nyamira from Kisii spent hours waiting for water level outside Storm Hotel to come down before continuing with their journey.

Kennedy Monene who works at Storm Hotel that is build a few metres from a river bank found their business premises flooded with water.

Meanwhile, Kisii County announced early this month to have set aside Sh1.29 million to quell disasters during heavy rains.

In his speech during Mashujaa Day celebrations, governor James Ongwae said more funds are expected from the national government and other stakeholders to fill any deficit.
