Kisii County youths have been urged to seize the opportunity offered in village polytechnics to acquire technical skills that can make them relevant in the competitive job market.
Speaking on Tuesday at Riana village in Bobasi constituency, Senator Janet Ong’era expressed her disappointment with the number of recruitment to village polytechnics’, saying the rate was ‘a bit slow’ and needed urgent redress.
“As county leaders, we have to ensure our children get technical skills given in village polytechnics. However, I am disappointed that the institutions are still recording a low intake,” she said.
“The rate of absorption of students is a bit slow despite the efforts of the county government to equip the facilities. Time has come for our youths to seize the opportunity and enroll in large numbers so that they gain skills that can make them relevant in job market,” she added.
Ong’era faulted pressure given by parents from the regions to county government aiming at recruitment of more instructors and challenged them to engage in a campaign that would lure more youths to join the institutions.
‘It’s true that the county has to deploy more instructors to all village polytechnics but as parents, we should first take an initiative of luring our children to enroll,” added the ODM senator.
She also urged former form four students who may not manage grades to join universities and middle level colleges to make use of the facilities.
“I know 2015 KCSE will be out soon. It’s good that our children understand not everybody will qualify to universities and colleges. These facilities are supported to train our youths by equipping them with technical skills. Our youths must wake up and embrace them,” she said.
