Residents of Nyawita, Kisumu are accusing the county government of segregation when it comes to garbage collection.

Those from the informal settlements say the county government only collects wastes from 'high class' estates.

The locals say it is unfair for the county government to be collecting waste from Migosi Estate which is next to Nyawita on a daily basis, but skipping theirs.

"We are equal and demand equal treatment. Our waste is just similar to the one in Migosi," said Joel Okoth.

The locals said they have been forced to throw waste in open spaces as they do not have any other option. This move has raised fears of diseases.

"Too much waste is a big risk to us. We are at risk of contracting diseases such as cholera. This is all due to the segregation from our county government," said Purity Akoth a resident.

They claim to have made frequent visits to the county government in order to find a lasting solution, but all has been in vain.

An officer from the county government who sought anonymity as she is not allowed to address the media said that inaccessibility of the area is to blame.

"Our garbage collection trucks can access these homes because structures and houses are disorganised. With such a situation, it's hard for us to collect the garbage,"  said the officer.
