More than 100 families displaced by floods in Kisumu County have received food and non-food items from Ogra and Omega Foundations.

The families fled their homes which are flooded as a result of the ongoing flooding occasioned by the El~Nino floods. They are camping at Kanyalwal Primary School in Nyakach. The families received blankets, mosquito nets and bar soaps among others

Margaret Ochiel who is the chairlady of the flood victims camping at the school thanked the two organisations for the initiative adding that women and children have been most affected.

Ogra Foundation Director Dr Hezron McObewa said they decided to make such an intervention to ensure the families that were displaced receive assistance.

McObewa said flood is a perennial problem and urged the county and national governments to find permanent solutions.

Speaking on Thursday while distributing the items to the affected families, he said dykes should be built along the river banks to control floods.

McObewa announced that Ogra and Omega foundations will conduct massive free medical camp in various evacuation centres to prevent disease outbreak.

This comes as Kenya Red Cross Society raised an alarm of possible outbreak of waterborne diseases in flood affected villages in Kisumu.

The society manager for Kisumu and Siaya counties Jacob Kitiyo said this is as a result of stagnant water in the affected areas.

Commissioner John Elungata said more than 2,000 families had displaced in Nyakach, Nyando, Muhoroni and Kisumu East sub-counties after river Nyando burst its banks.

In Nyakach Sub County, 500 people are displaced at Gem Rae, 400 in West Nyakach location with 400 at Nyakwere area. Another 640 families from 128 households have also been displaced in Nyando Sub County. Seventeen houses were also submerged in Kisumu East Sub County.

Elungata said 21 houses in Nyando have been destroyed by the raging waters. He added that four schools have also been flooded making them inaccessible to pupils. He said more than 30 acres of rice have been swept away by the floods.

He said the affected families have been moved to various evacuation centres in the county.

However, he said, the water level has gone done with most families back in their homes.
