Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Kisumu group plans to plant 100,000 seedlings in the county during this long rain.

The chairlady of the organisation, Atieno Otieno, said women have the capacity to make Kisumu green.

Ms Otieno said they will work with institutions like schools to be able to plant the trees in homesteads, hospitals and learning institutions.

She said trees are very critical in conserving environment and women will not be left out since they are the most vulnerable to climate change.

“Women are the most vulnerable group to climate change and I have talked to them to be in the forefront to plant trees in the county,” she said.

Speaking to reporters in Kisumu on Friday after meeting her members at Museum of Kenya, Ms Otieno said women will also embrace horticultural farming.

She said it is worrying that most of the vegetable food being consumed in Kisumu comes from outside the region.

“We have good soil, we have the manpower, why must we wait for food crop from other areas. It is time women take farming seriously,” she said.

Atieno said the organisation is also encouraging women to start dairy farming to boost their economic level.

She said there are a number of opportunities that can pull women out of poverty and urged them to form groups and be able to implement some of those opportunities.
