Kenya Medical Training College has embarked on an elaborate collaboration plan with the county governments to be able to expand the training facilities.

The college chief executive officer, Peter Tum, said that in the advent of devolution, the counties have health needs that must be tackled in a planned manner.

Tum said the counties will give land for the expansion of training facilities to accommodate more students as a way of bridging the heath staff shortage in the country.

Speaking in Kisumu on Friday after visiting a number of counties in Nyanza region, Tum reported that the governors are more willing to cooperate with the college.

“In my tour of the region, I have met the four governors in the counties of Migori, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Siaya. The governors are committed to this course,” he said.

He announced that the college will give the counties 30 percent slot for students to be trained under the new collaboration.

The CEO said the arrangement had been passed by the board and will take immediate effect in the next academic year.

Tum said the college has come up with a number of reforms that will rejuvenate the health institution to deliver to the challenges facing the health sector.

“We have added more courses to address the needs of the counties,” he said.
