Two students from Kitutu Masaba who sat for KCPE in 2015 have received sponsorship from KNUT-Masaba branch, a week after form ones reported to their respective schools.

The two, Onesmas Ombego and Damaris Monyenye were former students of St Andrews Kaggwa in Borabu and had reportedly opted to repeat in class eight at Nyakongo primary school despite scoring 401 and 387 marks respectively.

Branch Deputy Secretary General James Oteki confirmed having received the compelling story of the two and said the union will pay their fee in Maseno School and Kereri girls till they complete their secondary school education.

“I received the sad story of the two children from Charles Getuno (head teacher Nyakongo), and I had to notify my colleagues in the executive. We had to chip in and rescue the situation because they are orphans and the union has a scheme of sponsoring such children. They will have to report to school immediately,” he said.

Oteki took the opportunity to challenge political leadership to give priority to impoverished children when disbursing bursaries to minimize such cases.

“These children were receiving support from a good Samaritan who unfortunately passed away in December. This is where we need to see bursaries being given to rightful students. We have seen cases where the halves get the sponsorship from CDF at the expense of the poor. Political leadership should address such shortcomings,” he said.

The long-term Deputy Secretary also urged the community to always show their love to the needy by contributing towards their education.

“The two children are just but a sample of many more cases. The community also has a role of helping such cases. But more importantly, KNUT stands for quality and affordable education fort its people and we are ready to see our bright children getting the education they deserve,” he said.
