Kogony community elders in Kisumu have urged the National Land Commission (NLC) to fast track the compensation process for their land they say was used to expand the Kisumu International Airport.

The community vice-chairman Jacob Juma said they have suffered over the lack of enough land saying they have been evicted to create space for the airport.

“Most of our land has been taken by the Kenya Airports Authority. Some are now being grabbed by local investors. We want justice,” he said.

Juma said since 1914, the community has been tossed around by the successive governments over compensation.

He said the community is demanding compensation in terms of cash or be allocated another parcel of land for resettlement.

NLC chairman Mohammed Swazuri who briefly visited the elders in the outskirts of Kisumu city on Monday promised to look into the matter.

The secretary of the elders Maurice Roche said the community has received little support from the government.

Roche, however, said the elders have been assured of support by the commission.

“Swazuri was here and he met the elders, he has promised us that the commission will look into the matter urgently,” he said.
