The Kenya Revenue Authority on Tuesday moved to court seeking to challenge an order allowing Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s family to reopen two container freight stations.

The Mombasa High Court had last week stopped KRA from closing down Autoports Freight Terminals Limited and Portside Freight Terminals Limited or stopping the companies from conducting their operations pending hearing and determination of the case.

KRA through lawyer Pius Nyaga on Tuesday argued that investigations are ongoing at the two container freight stations.

Mr Nyaga told the court that if operations are allowed to continue, investigations which are being carried out will be paralysed, a move that will lead to massive loss of government revenue.

The application by KRA will be heard on February 18.

Justice Patrick Otieno had allowed Joho’s family to challenge KRA’s decision to suspend their licence.

In January, KRA officials raided the two freight stations and ordered they be closed claiming that the facilities have been handling stolen and smuggled goods.

The freight stations lawyers had argued that KRA and Kenya Ports Authority did not give them any reasons for closing down the stations.
