The Kenya Transporters Association chairman Paul Maiyo has called for automation and reduction of weighbridges across the country's highways.
On Thursday, Maiyo said many weighbridges on various highways in the country were inefficient and corruption hubs.
"Though a number of weighbridges have already been automated, we call upon the Kenya National Highways Authority to do the same with the rest. This will curb corruption and the time spent waiting at the weighbridges," said Maiyo at Ruiru weighbridge.
He added that many weighbridges were a major source cause of traffic snarl-ups, which he said, were costing the economy a lot.
The KTA chairman asserted that removing of some of what he referred to as “unnecessary” weighbridges would have a positive impact to the economy.
"You can imagine the number of weighbridges a truck heading to Kampala from Mombasa has to pass through and the time spent waiting per weighbridge. We lose many trips there and sometimes even business. This has to change", Maiyo said.
He stated that the delays occasioned by the weighbridges were also not good for regional trade which he said now requires a more robust approach.
