Nyamira County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) executive secretary Lewis Nyakweba has called upon the government to remit free primary and secondary school funds to facilitate education.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday ahead of the the Kuppet Annual General meeting for Nyamira branch on Saturday, Nyakweba said the government should take up its responsibility of disbursing the funds as required by law.
He said when the government agreed to pay school fees for pupils and students, it became the surrogate parent hence it is a must for it to do so.
“If the government fails to beat the ultimatum we are going to direct all school heads to close down the schools and push forward the national examinations till when the government will send the funds to schools,” he said.
The executive also ruled out any possible merger between Kuppet and other teacher organisations saying its members should rather strive to strengthen it.
“The merger is not there. The original idea was to form a federation, but our counterparts in the Kenya National Union of Teachers have failed to realise it as their intention is to kill Kuppet,” he stated.
“According to the constitution, teachers’ issues must strictly be handled by the Teachers Service Commission. We cannot have two centres of power serving teachers. We cannot have the TSC handling some of the issues and the ministry others,” he added.
