The mother of the late Kwekwe Mwandaza, a 14-year-old girl who was killed by police officers on Monday fainted outside the court shortly after the court sentenced the officers accused of killing her daughter.
Umazi Zani collapsed while she was speaking to journalists outside the court room after the ruling that sentenced the two officers to seven years in jail each and was rushed to hospital.
Ms Zani who was overwhelmed by grief told journalists before she fainted that the sentence against the officers was lenient.
Zani who broke into tears said she was not satisfied with the court ruling saying the seven years sentence was not enough for the people who killed her daughter.
“Seven years only for my daughter’s killers. I cannot bear to see them walking the streets after they killed my baby,” she said.
Judge Martin Muya on Monday sentenced Kinango DCIO Veronica Gitahi and police constable Issa Mzee to serve seven years each in prison after they were accused of manslaughter over the death of Kwekwe in Kwale County.
Judge Muya in his ruling noted that the two officers were reckless with their fire arms in their discharge of duty saying officers should avoid misusing guns.
Kwekwe was shot dead at her home in Kinango village on August 22, 2014 by police officers who were hunting down her uncle, a suspected criminal.
Judge Muya had earlier noted that there was gross omission on the part of the accused persons by failing to ascertain the occupants of the house before they raided.
The Judge further ruled that the officers were reckless for shooting in darkness without establishing who was in the house.
Judge Muya however said that the prosecution had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused had intention of murdering the girl which reduced their charge to manslaughter.
