The swelling levels of Lake Naivasha have raised concern from the facility’s management with users being cautioned against ignoring routine security necessities so as to avert accidents.

Speaking at the Lake on Tuesday, Boat Owners’ Association chairperson David Kilo called on fellow fishermen to prioritise safety arguing that nobody had control over the heavy rains being experienced in many parts of the country, but insisted on the importance of preserving life and maintaining safety at the work station.

“We are not restricting anybody from accessing the lake, it’s just a security concern because we will be blamed in the long run in case of an emergency or accident,” he said.

The chairman specifically took issue with illegal fishermen who usually access the lake’s deep waters late in the night when wardens have completed their routine patrols saying they were joking with their lives.

He revealed that as stakeholders, they had liaised with the senior warden at the lake’s conservative to help intensify night patrols for precautionary purposes.

“All of us know that Lake Suswa has burst its banks and we foresee a similar scenario here if the rains don’t stop anytime soon. What we are saying is; let’s not assume that all is well and forget about our own safety,” he added.

The county is feeling a direct impact of the ongoing heavy rains with authorities calling on residents living in low lands to move to safer grounds.
