Lari sub county Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chair lady Florence Wambui has urged women to help fight alcoholism among the youths.

Speaking at Nyambari AIC church in Limuru on Monday during a mentorship programme for the youth, she raised concerns over rising cases of alcoholism among youths.

She stated that despite the government efforts to fight drug abuse and alcoholism such cases remain high in the sub-county.

“It is time women took a decisive role in fighting drug abuse and alcoholism among our young people,” she said. Ms Wambui said that women have a role to play in ending drug menace adding that they should mentor their sons and daughters well.

The MYWO chair asked the Kiambu county government and other stakeholders to initiate empowerment programmes for drug addicts.

She said that though many addicts are willing to change but they lack access to rehabilitation programmes.

“We want to see our children prosper in life and not being consumed by alcohol and other things like prostitution and crime,” she said.

The MYWO chair also advised youths to keep off criminal activities and take advantage of the government programmes to get empowerment.

She asked youths and marginalized groups to grab the development funds the national and county government is giving to better their lives.

Kiambu County according to statistics from the National Authority for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) is among counties with high cases of drug and alcohol abuse.

In July, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a crackdown on sale of illicit brews and second generation alcoholic drinks in Kiambu and other counties across the county.

However, there have been claims of re-emergence of illicit brews in some parts of Kiambu.

Last week while unveiling the Sub County Alcoholic Drinks and Regulation Control Board, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo directed the police to crack down on people re-introducing illicit brews and alcoholic drinks in the county.
